Senior Software Engineer, Voice AI
(Real-Time Voice AI & Healthcare Technology)
Compensation: $200,000 - $220,000 + Benefits
Location: Remote
The Company
We're partnering with a healthcare technology company developing real-time AI-powered medical interpretation technology that enables clinicians and patients to communicate across language barriers.
Its multilingual voice platform is already being used in real clinical environments, combining sophisticated speech AI with a clear mission to improve access to healthcare. The company is entering an exciting phase of product development and expansion.
The Opportunity
This is an opportunity to join a small, technically strong team working on some of the more complex challenges in production voice AI.
You'll take substantial ownership of core engineering systems, influence how the product evolves, and solve problems that go beyond conventional conversational AI applications. The environment combines the autonomy and pace of a startup with the resources and reach of a larger organization.
The Role
We're looking for a software engineer with strong backend engineering fundamentals and hands-on experience building real-time voice AI applications.
You'll work across the core voice infrastructure, Python-based agent systems, backend services, and product integrations. The focus is on engineering reliable, low-latency conversational experiences that perform in unpredictable real-world environments—not primarily on training machine learning models.
What You'll Do
Build and scale real-time voice AI systems, working across streaming audio, speech recognition, translation, synthesis, and conversational workflows.
Develop Python-based voice agents using real-time communication frameworks, handling session management, multi-party conversations, and complex audio interactions.
Engineer reliable backend systems using Python, Go, APIs, and event-driven architectures to support production voice applications.
Improve real-world audio performance, tackling challenges such as background noise, speaker diarization, interruptions, latency, and natural conversation flow.
Develop smarter conversational experiences, including clarification handling, safety guardrails, and intelligent responses when speech is unclear or communication breaks down.
Partner closely with AI, product, and engineering colleagues to integrate speech and language models, improve application performance, and deliver features driven by genuine user needs.
Own engineering work end to end, from identifying problems and making architectural decisions through implementation, deployment, monitoring, and continuous improvement.
What You'll Bring
5+ years of software engineering experience, ideally across backend, full-stack, or applied AI product development.
Hands-on experience with real-time voice AI, conversational systems, or audio-streaming applications, including frameworks such as LiveKit, Pipecat, or comparable technologies.
Strong Python proficiency, particularly asynchronous programming, production APIs, and real-time application development.
Solid backend engineering fundamentals, with Go experience or the ability to become productive in Go quickly.
Understanding of streaming architectures, WebRTC, telephony, speech processing, or integrating speech and language AI services.
A track record of independently delivering production features, making sound technical decisions, and communicating complex engineering trade-offs.
A product-oriented mindset, with genuine interest in user experience and building systems that work reliably outside controlled development environments.
What This Role Requires
Proven software engineering experience: A strong engineering foundation and experience taking software products or AI-powered features into production.
Relevant voice or real-time systems expertise: Practical experience developing voice AI systems, or clear evidence of having built comparable real-time conversational or audio applications.
Strong Python and backend capability: Confidence working with asynchronous services, APIs, and production backend systems, alongside the ability to work effectively with Go.
End-to-end ownership: Ability to operate independently in a small, fast-moving engineering team, take responsibility for substantial technical problems, and explain engineering decisions clearly.
Previous healthcare experience is not required. Familiarity with regulated environments, multilingual systems, or speech technology is an advantage.
Tech Stack
Languages: Python, Go, JavaScript / TypeScript
Voice & Real-Time Systems: LiveKit, WebRTC, telephony, streaming audio, speech-to-text, text-to-speech
Frontend: React, Next.js, Node.js
Cloud & Infrastructure: AWS, LiveKit Cloud, containerized services, CI/CD, infrastructure-as-code
AI Integration: Speech recognition, translation, synthesis models, LLM integrations, and production model APIs
Why Join
Own meaningful technical problems: Take responsibility for complex voice infrastructure and help shape the architecture of a growing AI product, with direct influence over engineering decisions.
Work on genuinely challenging applied AI: Solve real-world problems involving multilingual conversations, speaker detection, audio quality, latency, and conversational reliability, rather than building another conventional chatbot.
Build technology with visible human impact: Work on a product already used in clinical settings, helping patients and healthcare professionals communicate more effectively while contributing to its next stage of growth.
